About Maureen

Hello there! My name is Dr. Maureen Spranza, and I have been teaching music for thirty-five years. I recently retired from the San Lorenzo Unified School District and received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Alameda County Branch of the Music Teachers Association of California.

My students participate in various MTAC programs and have achieved State Contest wins and performances at Carnegie Hall. I hold a Ph.D. in Education from Capella University, an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music.

As a writer, my education articles have been published in journals such as OnCue. As a musician, I have performed with artists like Vijay Iyer and MC Hammer, and currently play saxophone in a band called StarStrut. My music has been featured on radio, television, CDs, and the internet.

Beyond music, I enjoy acting, gardening, genealogy, biofeedback, and creating art with lights. I love spending time with my two adult daughters and traveling to New Jersey to visit family. I look forward to sharing my passion for music with you and helping you on your musical journey.

Book With Maureen

“I didn’t want my son to be turned off to piano because of all the practicing. Lots of work but not a ton of play. James brings enthusiasm and joy to the discipline. He picked up my son’s style and personality, and could flow according to my son’s uniqueness/playfulness.”

“My biggest concern is if my kids don’t enjoy and have no progress over a significant amount of lessons time. So far your role as a teacher has been very helpful in making my kids interested & focused on their lessons”
